The British Museum is currently presenting a major exhibition on the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the first ever held on these important cities at the British Museum, and the first such major exhibition in London for almost 40 years.

Italian researchers have unearthed a marble benchmark which was once used to measure the shape of Earth in the 19th century.

Roman man's face finally revealed at Caerleon museum

The face of a wealthy Roman citizen who lived in south Wales has been revealed nearly two millennia after he died.

Using the latest technology, experts have produced a portrait of the man whose skeleton was uncovered 18 years ago in Caerleon, near Newport.

Pompeii destroyed and discovered

Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August AD 79. Memory of its former location was later lost. Then, in 1594, workmen employed to dig a tunnel designed to divert the waters of the River Sarno uncovered Roman wall-paintings. They were working for architect Domenico Fontana, who, in turn, was employed by Count Muzio Tuttavilla. But the site uncovered could not, at that time, be identified.
